Write a response in which you discuss the extent to which you agree or disagree with the claim. In developing and supporting you position, be sure to address the most compelling reasons and/or examples that could be used to challenge your position.

Laws are put in place to protect individuals. They are there to safeguard natural human rights. The prompt suggests that every individual in a society is responsible for obeying just laws and disobey unjust ones. Firstly, the definition of ‘just’ is ambiguous, open to interpretation. What I might find tolerable might not sit well with another person. So, I cannot fully support the author. Although, I agree with the author in the following cases.
I define ‘just’ laws as the laws that are equitable towards all. In court, you don’t differentiate based on the color of a persons’ skin, sex, or religion. To buttress my point, I would like to cite two ‘unjust’ laws that are xenophobic towards a group. To begin, we can look at the law in Saudi Arabia that had proscribed women from driving in the country. Similarly, the prohibition of same-sex couples, interracial couples in India. All these laws were in effect without providing a valid reason for their existence. In such cases, when the law is partial towards some and taking away someone’s fundamental human right of equality, it should be upon the citizens to challenge these laws and move towards an equal setting.
